Emotional Velcro

January 14th, 2006

“That’s the magic of writing talent. It’s something that’s difficult to develop, but once you’re able to, it’s as good as gold.”

Brian Hill

Why are some books so hard to put down?  You know the feeling. Turning page after page late into the night; skipping meals and workouts just to read the next chapter.

Brian Hill and Dee Power, the authors of The Making of a Bestseller, set out to find the answer.  After interviewing over 24 bestselling authors they discovered the quality of “emotional Velcro”.

Author’s who consistently top the bestseller lists are able put ink on paper in such a way that people feel a real connection. As Brian told me, “Once you master that ability you can sustain a writing career for decades.”

Did you know that at any given time 90% of the bestselling books are by authors who have topped the charts before?  Look no further than today’s NY Times with heavyweights James Patterson and Stephen King holding down the top spots.

So what is the secret to developing emotional Velcro? What was the one characteristic that Brian and Dee found in all of the authors they interviewed? Writing.

The bestsellers didn’t just talk about writing or think about writing. They actually wrote. The more that they wrote the clearer their voice came through and the easier it was for readers to connect to their writing.  In short their writing style became their brand.

What is your writing brand? How do you connect to your readers? The more that you write the clearer the answer becomes.  It’s that simple.  Good luck and have fun.

The Future of Information

November 6th, 2005

“Writers who are smart have to be agnostic about the format.”

Gary Hoover

Ever wonder if Google, blogs and downloads will replace traditional books? Recently I spoke with Gary Hoover about the future of publishing. In the early 80s Gary founded BOOKSTOP—the first bookstore super chain—which was acquired by Barnes & Noble in 1989 for $41.5 million. A year later he founded Hoover’s, Inc. which became the world’s largest internet-based provider of information about companies. Hoover’s, Inc. sold in 2003 for $117 million. I asked Gary what advice he had for today’s authors. “You have to look at your customer and think about what it is you’re offering and how you’re going to offer it,” He told me. “If someone says, ‘I work with the printed page and only the printed page.’ That’s not a good way to think. “At Hoover’s, Inc. we became very agnostic,” Gary continued. “We didn’t care if customers wanted it as a book, CD-ROM, online, or a subscription. We even talked about creating three ring binders and mailing them each week.” As information entrepreneurs we live in an opportune time. Never has it been easier to create and distribute our ideas. The publisher of tomorrow will seek out and take advantage of developing technology. Gary did this in the 90s with Hoover’s, Inc. What started out as a traditional print press grew into the internet’s most accessed site for business information. What opportunities will exist in the next 10 years that you can capitalize on?

PR Is Like Gift Wrapping

October 16th, 2005

“It’s very accessible. A bright twelve-year-old could understand it.”

Michael Levine

Ever wonder why some books, people and products stay in the public eye, whereas others are forgotten with the changing of the season? Enter Michael Levine, founder of one of Hollywood’s top PR firms and author of the most widely read public relations book—Guerrilla P.R. I asked Michael about the role of public relations in the success of his book and clients. “It‘s like gift wrapping,” he told me. “If I gave you a present in a Tiffany’s box you would place a higher perceived value on the gift. The reason that’s true is because you and I live in a culture that gift wraps everything. We gift wrap our politicians, our corporate heads, our movie stars, and even our toilet paper. That’s the process of public relations—taking products and services and gift wrapping them.” As independent publishers we can learn from Michael’s experience. Unlike authors who hand over their books’ packaging to major publishers, we each have the opportunity to choose the message our book portrays. Just like Michael’s PR firm has packaged and re-packaged the image of countless celebrities, we can change and modify the design of our book to prolong its life. People do judge a book by its cover. What message is yours sending?

Niche Your Market to Grow Your Market

September 11th, 2005

“I could hardly believe that I had written the very first book on that subject in the world.”

Dottie Walters

Ever wonder how the experts became the experts? Take Dottie Walters for example. Author of Speak and Grow Rich, founder of a speakers bureau representing over 24,000 speakers, and publisher of the only international speakers bureau directory, Dottie is considered a legend in the speaking and sales industries. I asked Dottie what the secret to her success was. “You have to niche and then grow from there,” Dottie said. “Begin by asking yourself, ‘What am I good at?’ and then: ‘Who needs it?’”

“When I was in my early twenties I began a newspaper shopper’s column. To help grow the column. I went to the library to look up books on women in sales.”

“The librarian searched. She checked the big city, county and then the state library and there was nothing, absolutely nothing. Everything was written by men and for men. So I went home and thought, ‘I think I’m suppose to write that book.’”

Dottie’s Never Underestimate the Selling Power of a Women was the first book ever written for women in sales.

“Tupperware bought the entire first edition,” Dottie explained. “Then other direct sales companies like Amway and Mary Kay all bought my book by the thousands and hired me to come speak. That launched me into the speaking profession”

As information entrepreneurs we can all learn from Dottie’s experience. In order to expand our market we must first niche our market. It’s hard to develop a marketing plan for the world, but it’s entirely possible to target a piece of the world. Dottie did it forty years ago when she wrote a book for women in sales. It was an unknown market that opened up a world of possibilities. What industry or group do you know who isn’t being served?

Creating "Ah, ha’s" when writing

August 21st, 2005

“Interestingly, the second most common comment I get is, ‘I don’t read books, but I read yours non-stop, straight through.’”

Michael Gerber

Ever wonder why some books run off the self, where as others slump into hibernation? Take The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber, it’s wearing marathon shoes. Originally published as The E-Myth in 1986 and then as The E-Myth Revisited the book has sold over 2 million copies and continues to make the business best-seller lists. In fact, the August BusinessWeek Long-Run Best Seller List ranks The E-Myth Revisited as #6.

During a recent interview I asked Michael why The E-Myth Revisited continues to sell and spread by word of mouth. “I think it resides in what people say to me who have read my book,” Michael told me. “They say, Michael you saw me. You’re talking about me.”

“You see as business owners, people are working their tails off–12 hours a day/ 7 days a week. They never seem to get it done,” Michael continued. “They never seem to solve the problems. And in one fell swoop I explain it to them in a way that is immediately available. They instantly get it and it’s liberating.”

As authors, whether we’re drafting our third book or writing our first pamphlet, we can all learn from Michael’s experience. When writing create “Ah, ha” moments where the reader pauses and thinks “this person is just like me.” He or she really understands me. Michael did it with The E-Myth Revisited. Business owners see themselves in his book and 2 million of them have responded with interest.
